CHARLOTTE, N.C. ââ¬â Melvin Graham, the younger brother of evangelist Billy Graham, died of cardiac arrest Aug. 24 at Carolinas Medical Center, according to a news release. He was 78.
The younger Graham was a dairy farmer, developer and lay evangelist who spoke at churches, business conferences and festivals conducted by Billy Graham's son Franklin, The Associated Press reported.
In 1985, he became a board member of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. In 1999, the association named him board member emeritus.
Billy Graham said in a statement he spent two days with his brother recently. He described him as very generous with his time and money.
"Melvin was not only my brother, but was one of the closest and loyal friends I ever had," Billy Graham said. "I look forward to seeing Melvin again when I get to heaven."
Melvin Graham's survivors include his wife Peggy and their sons Deryl and Mel. A memorial service is planned for 7 p.m., Aug. 28, at Central Church of God in Charlotte.
