SAN RAMON -- Members of San Ramon Presbyterian Church decided to forego their annual retreat to the California coastline to stay home and do a few chores -- for their neighbors, that is.
The 500-member church will kick off its Building Bridges Project Oct. 25 by fixing leaky pipes, trimming lawns and generally laboring for community residents who are unable to do so for themselves, the Tri-Valley Herald reported.
Members of the five-year-old church, who hold services at California High School, have identified a number of projects to tackle but are looking for more.
They will restore a boat headed to Macedonia on a humanitarian mission, clean up Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, build a wheelchair ramp in Livemore and tidy a senior home in San Ramon. Other projects include fire abatement, landscaping and gutter clearing.
The Rev. Ed Blake told the newspaper he hopes the event will become a community tradition.
