MINNEAPOLIS -- An Episcopal committee will let the church's delegates decide whether to ratify the June election an openly homosexual bishop from New Hampshire.
The Associated Press reported that the ruling is the first step in the process of allowing the Rev. Gene Robinson to assume his post, which some have warned could split the denomination.
The committee did not release the secret vote's tally. Delegates must approve all new bishops at the General Convention. This year's national meeting began June 30 and concludes Aug. 8.
The committee questioned Robinson during a 90-minute hearing Aug. 1. Robinson told the committee he reconciles his relationship with his male partner despite biblical prohibitions on homosexuality because his partner's unfailing love mirrors some of the never-ending love God has for him.
