DETROIT -- A federal judged ruled in favor of a college student denied a scholarship because she wants to major in theology, AgapePress reported.
Judge George Steeh's order prohibits the State of Michigan from enforcing a state law barring Ave Maria College student Teresa Becker from obtaining a scholarship because of her major.
Her attorney, Pat Gillen of the Thomas More Law Center, said the state would rather discriminate than face lawsuits by the American Civil Liberties Union.
"It's really outrageous that Michigan has decided if a student takes religion seriously and decides to pursue that realm of inquiry in their college education, (the student) will be penalized by the state for doing so," Gillen said.
