PHILADELPHIA -- A group of monks is turning to eBay to try to raise money for a new monastery, according to a news report.
The Associated Press reported that in a seven-day auction that began July 21 on eBay, the Benedictine Order of St. John the Beloved in eastern Pennsylvania opened bidding at $1 million for "naming rights" to the church building, monastery and bell towers the order hopes to build. The structures can be bid on separately.
Much as sports teams do for stadiums and arenas, the order will allow winning bidders to have the structures named for them or people of their choice.
If marketing the buildings is a success, choir books, stained glass windows and church pews will go on future auction blocks, the news service reported.
As of early morning July 25, no bids had been placed.
