NATCHEZ, Miss. -- Members of First Baptist Church in Natchez, Miss., are reaching out to their Hispanic neighbors with Spanish-language Bible classes, according to The Natchez Democrat.
Astrid Daly, who teaches one of the Spanish Sunday school classes, said she and a friend began knocking on doors in a nearby apartment building where they knew potential students lived.
"These people had been staying inside their apartments all day," Daly said. "They didn't know anyone. There was a real hunger for this."
Spanish-text Bibles are used for the weekly classes, with Daly switching from English to Spanish during the discussion. Students want to study in their own language but also want help becoming proficient in English, Daly said. Recently the church began offering English as a Second Language courses.
The students are natives of Mexico, Central America and Puerto Rico.
