BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A Baptist church plans to open a Subway franchise on its campus to raise money and provide training for younger members, according to a report in The Buffalo News.
The Rev. Darius Pridgen, pastor of True Bethel Baptist Church, will attend a two-week training program for new franchise owners at the Milford, Conn.-based company's corporate training facility.
"This might be a way to help us continue having an income in the church, even during devastating economic times," Pridgen said.
Graduates of the 3,000-member church's employment skills classes will work in the restaurant for several months, he said. The church will then help them find permanent jobs.
The franchise may be one of the only to open on church grounds, Subway spokesman Kevin Kane told the newspaper. The company has more than 19,000 stores in 72 countries.
