VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Regent University will host a workshop designed to help Christian psychologists integrate their faith with their profession.

The evangelical Christian school will conduct its one day "Psycho-Theological Institute," June 28, AgapePress reported. Mental health professionals, lay counselors and pastors can take part in workshops dealing with "Ethics and Pastoral Counseling," "Life Coaching," and "Solution-Focused Pastoral Counseling."

Dr. Rosemarie Hughes, dean of Regent's School of Psychology and Counseling, said Christian psychologists for decades have discussed how to integrate their faith with their professions.

"There has been a long succession of books and programs and different types of things going on, and more and more (we) are realizing that people want spiritual integration in their counseling because their spirituality is a very big part of their lives," Hughes said. "And people who are Christian want to be able to know how to do more than just open the Bible and give them some scriptures to go home with."

Hughes said Regent does not teach counseling as a way to alleviate responsibility for sin, but it does teach theory about human nature.

"Of course, human nature is human nature -- God created us as human beings," she said, "and a lot of the so-called 'secular' theories work for Christians who have a human nature also -- just like a lot of financial principles work for Christians whether the financial principles come from Christians or not."

Hughes said Regent goes beyond teaching the theories of personality, counseling, and psychology, by using "the good science piece" with "the good faith piece."
