BLUE SPRINGS, Kan. -- A former church financial secretary has been charged with writing checks worth $111,706 that she cashed for personal use over a four-year period, according to news reports.
Patricia L. Boyd, 37, is accused of writing 103 checks on the account of First United Methodist of Blue Springs. She allegedly forged the signature of a second church employee required for the checks to be valid. A report in The Examiner stated Boyd worked in the financial office of the church for six years.
The church issued a written statement that the theft has not disrupted operations. It has kept current on mortgage payments and has contributed more than $400,000 to various missions in the past three years.
A church administrator discovered the theft in April after noticing some improperly written checks, the newspaper reported.
Boyd allegedly admitted the theft when questioned by police. Police records allege she wrote checks to herself totaling $5,709 in 2000; $37,913 in 2001; $52,429 in 2002; $16,659 in 2003.
