WATERLOO, Iowa -- A zoning proposal for a video store is expected to receive stiff opposition from a church group because of the store's plan to rent adult videos, according to a news report.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the Family Video chain has asked for land to be rezoned so it can build its third area store.
Members of nearby Walnut Ridge Baptist Church and Baptist Academy have objected to the request because of the store's inventory includes adult videos.
Family Video representatives said the adult videos represent less than 3 percent of the store's business and are kept in an enclosed room in the corner of the store. The room is monitored by a video camera and is inaccessible to minors, the newspaper reported.
The city Planning, Programming and Zoning Commission has already endorsed the request. City Council members will decide whether to grant it when they meet June 9.
Church member Arnold Becker challenged council members to visit the chain's two other stores before voting.
"Go into the back room and see what you see," Becker said. "And if I could make a suggestion, take your wife with you, or if you have a daughter that is over 18 years old, take her with you."
The church has yet to file a formal letter of opposition, the newspaper reported. Based on the size of the church, formal opposition would mean at least six of the seven council members would have to approve the zoning request.
Realtor Jack Nooren, who is handling the sale, said 11 of 15 neighboring property owners have signed letters endorsing the building plans.
