PASADENA, Calif. -- In response to neighborhood complaints that church parking is taking too many spaces, the city council voted to adopt preferential-parking rules, the Pasadena Star News reported.
The council voted 7-1 to restrict street parking to residents with permits or to guests with temporary permits.
Members of the Logos Evangelical and Seventh-Day Adventist churches attended the meeting to ask the council to forgo the restrictions. They said their churches were working to improve parking conditions, according to the news report.
However, councilman Paul Little said three years of negotiation had not led to any compromise and restrictions were needed to protect residents along Washington Boulevard.
"The question now is do you support the neighbors or not," Little said. "The fact that it is a church is immaterial to the discussion."
Councilwoman Joyce Streator dissented, saying the ruling could set a precedent in other parts of the city.
