BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- WorldCrafts, a nonprofit ministry that markets handmade crafts from across the world, broke even during 2001, according to the Baptist Press. It's the first time the Woman's Missionary Union ministry has operated in the black during its six-year existence.
The organization reports 43,340 items were sold last year, marking a 135 percent increase from 2000. The sales increase is attributed to WorldCrafts parties, the ministry's main marketing tool since 2000, project manager Karen Flowers said. The parties operate similar to Tupperware or Pampered Chef parties, where hostesses purchase a party kit containing catalogs, a video, recipes, invitations and clip art.
WorldCrafts provides income to impoverished men and women across the world by providing fair wages for their original art and other products. More than 130 items are featured in the WorldCrafts catalog.
