OSCEOLA, Ind. - Grace Brethren Church pastor Scott Distler has found an innovative way to entice people to visit his church: he arranged for them to get a discount on the gas to get them there.
From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, motorists stopping by Smith's 66 Food Mart were able to fill their tanks with gasoline costing $1.24 a gallon, 25 cents less than other gas stations were charging, with Grace Brethren picking up the difference, the South Bend Tribune reported.
"It's our way of giving back to the community that supports us," Distler told the newspaper. "We really believe that it is better to give than to receive."
Drivers lined up at each of the station's eight pumps.
Because the church is in a rural location, Distler said it has to be creative in attracting potential new members.
"We're off the main track," he said. "We have to be a little more innovative."
