The United Methodist Church will revisit whether it should change its policy that homosexual behavior is "incompatible with Christian teaching," according to a report by Agape Press.
The Methodists' Board of Church and Society proposed the policy should read: "Although faithful Christians disagree on the compatibility of homosexual practice with Christian teaching, we affirm that God's grace is available to all."
The issue will be debated at the church's 2004 General Conference in Pittsburgh. At the 2000 conference delegates voted 638 to 337 in favor of the traditional interpretation that homosexual behavior is incompatible with scripture.
The board will also propose new initiatives on bisexual and transgender rights, according to the report.
The conferences are conducted every four years.
