CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. -- In a gesture of spiritual support for their wives and other women, thousands of men from around the world have pleged to fast for at least 24 hours once a month, according to Catholic News Service.
The men, part of a group called e5men, take guidance from the apostle Paul's teachings in chapter 5 of Ephesians. The scripture calls for men to sacrifice for their wives just as Christ sacrificed for His bride, the church.
To participate, men must register at The Gift Foundation, must be baptised Christians and must agree to fast on simple bread and water at least one day each month. Unmarried men are invited to participate on behalf of other women in their lives, such as a mother, sister or daughter.
The group claims 4,150 men from 40 countries have signed up to date. The project was begun by Steve Habisohn to promote the Catholic Church's teachings on marriage and sexuality.
