TIFTON, Ga. -- The youth group at Trinity United Methodist Church wanted to do something to better its community during a recent day off from school.
According to the Tifton Gazette, the result of that desire now reflects the bright sun off the side of the Eastside Superette on Ferry Lake Road.
The group paint the north wall of the store to cover up graffiti spray-painted there by vandals.
Trinity pastor Herschel Collins explains that the day of painting is part of the group's awareness of service.
"Our youth are getting ready to go to South Dakota, and part of that mission trip is to be in service to other people," he said. "It's part of what being a Christian is all about." Gardener's wife Carol said that her husband wanted the youth to find a project that would mean something to their community.
"They want to do one service project a month and one of them came up with painting the wall to get rid of the graffiti," she said. "He made them do the initial contact with the store and everything."
After receiving permission from the store's owners, the group bought the paint and, Monday morning, they went to work. Five young people painted for a few hours to get the job done.
"I think it's wonderful seeing the kids taking that on themselves," said Collins. "I think they have a lot times, children have a lot to teach the adults about ministry. Part of it, probably to a large degree, is that their minds are still open. It's wonderful to see them get that done."
