BOSTON -- Boston Archdiocese's interim leader supports efforts to settle hundreds of lawsuits claiming church officials turned a blind eye to sexually abusive priests, according to The Associated Press.
Bishop Richard G. Lennon said he would not rule out sending the archdiocese into bankruptcy as the church struggles to resolve more than 400 lawsuits. The bankruptcy option was first brought up by Cardinal Bernard Law before he resigned the second week of December.
Lennon said he was hopeful the church could settle the lawsuits by selling some of its real estate holdings and by using insurance money. He also offered to sit down with any victims who request a meeting with him.
"Respectfully listening to them, I hope to learn the depth of their suffering," Lennon said. "I will extend to each of them my apology on behalf of the church for the abuse which they have suffered."
