BOSTON -- As the Boston Archdiocese released another round of personnel records on sexually abusive priests, 58 clerics submitted a letter Dec. 9 formally calling for Cardinal Bernard Law's resignation.
Law, meanwhile, was on his way to Rome amid speculation that he might resign or seek the Vatican's permission to send the archdiocese into bankruptcy, according to The Associated Press.
The priests calling for Law's resignation claim the Church continues to be compromised under his leadership.
"The events of recent months and, in particular, of these last few days, make it clear to us that your position as our bishop is so compromised that it is no longer possible for you to exercise the spiritual leadership required for the church of Boston," according to the letter calling for Law's resignation.
Raymond L. Flynn, the former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican and a former Boston mayor, said a quick decision is unlikely from the Vatican on how to handle a scandal that has battered the archdiocese for about a year.
"The Vatican will weigh and contemplate the issue," Flynn said.
