EPHRATA, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania youth group decided to give local shoppers more than bargain prices during a community outreach event.
More than 50 teen-agers from Evangel Assembly of God in Ephrata, Pa., held a 33-hour Bible reading marathon in front of the city's Wal-Mart Supercenter. The teens and church volunteers read the Bible non-stop over a public-address system, according to the Assemblies of God News Service.
Lou Strangarity, a co-leader of "The Rock" youth ministry, said they received only positive feedback. Wal-Mart's management, which allowed the group to set up, said several customers urged the store to let the youth hold future Bible readings. The event generated press coverage from the city's local newspaper, TV and radio stations.
"It's awesome that non-believers who have never heard got to hear the Word of God read," said Meylinda Haynes, a college student who participated in the Bible reading.
