• Supreme Court says no to Ten Commandments

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court rejected Indiana's appeal to place an 11,500-pound limestone monument with the Ten Commandments on its statehouse lawn.

Placing the monument on government property violates church-state separation under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment, the Supreme Court ruled, according to a Reuters report.

The proposed monument, which was to replace a Ten Commandments plaque smashed by vandals in 1991, also was to include the Bill of Rights and the preamble to the 1851 Indiana Constitution. The Indiana Civil Liberties Union sued the state, claiming the monument injected specific religious beliefs to the public square.
