BOSTON -- A Catholic charity under the umbrella of the Boston Archdiocese said it will consider accepting donations from a non-clergy reform group. The announcement came a day after Cardinal Bernard Law said such donations would be rejected, according to The Associated Press.
Catholic Charities said any inquiry from Voice of the Faithful to raise money on its behalf would be treated the same as any other potential donor.
"Once they approach us, then we'll deal with it," spokeswoman Maureen March told the AP. "Any policy decision like that runs through the board of trustees."
Boston archdiocese officials said they misspoke previously when they said their dozen separately incorporated charities, including Catholic Charities, would reject such donations.
Voice of the Faithful was formed in response to the clergy sex abuse scandal. The group created a separate fund to let parishioners bypass Law's annual fund-raising effort and give directly to archdiocese charities. Church officials claim that would undermine the cardinal's authority.
