Assemblies of God News Service: Hoping to be prepared for emergencies, some places of worship are now installing defibrillators, devices that deliver electrical shocks to restart failed hearts.
First Assembly of God in Boca Raton, Fla., last year installed two defibrillators, one in the sanctuary and one in the church's day-care center. About 35 people, including pastors, ushers, support staff and maintenance workers, are trained to use the devices.
The automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, are simple to operate. Once the system is opened, a computer voice talks the user through the process. The device monitors heart activity and only administers shocks when the machine determines the patient is in cardiac arrest.
ââ¬ÅStories are frequently told about how 911 didn't get there in time, and if there was an AED lives could be saved,ââ¬Â said First Assembly's church administrator Gerry Olsen. ââ¬ÅWe want to be prepared.ââ¬Â
