ATLANTA -- The North American Mission Board (NAMB) will pull its financial support from the District of Columbia Baptist Convention (DCBC) next summer following a year-long battle concerning accountability. NAMB gives the D.C. Convention nearly $500,000 a year for evangelism, church starting and ministry projects, according to the Baptist Press.
NAMB, a Southern Baptist Convention agency, wanted more details on where the D.C. Convention was spending its funds. DCBC executive director Jeffrey Haggray called the request an ultimatum that violated the convention's autonomy, according to the Baptist Press.
The agencies' cooperative agreement will end June 30, 2003, according to the NAMB.
NAMB supports eight missionaries from the DCBC. NAMB will help those missionaries find future assignments if they request, NAMB president Robert E. Reccord said.
In a letter to Haggray, Reccord said NAMB was still committed to serving Washington. Reccord said he was open to working together "on limited evangelism events and ministry projects that are compatible to both agencies," according to the Baptist Press.
Haggray did not indicate how the loss of funds would affect the DCBC.
