Telegraph: The Church of England saw a "small but significant" increase in the number of people going to church in 2003, a sign that its long-term decline may have slowed.

Officials said the figures were signs of genuine growth, but critics gave warning that the Church's future remained bleak because it was failing to attract young people.

More than 1.7 million people attended church and cathedral worship each month in 2003, a 1percent increase on the previous year, according to the official figures published yesterday.

Average weekly and Sunday attendance figures rose by a similar amount over the same period, as did numbers flocking to Christmas services and choosing church weddings.
