WASHINGTON -- Americans are losing confidence in organized religion, according to a CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll released June 26. Forty-five percent of those polled said they had "a lot of confidence" in organized religion, down from three in five a year ago.
The nationwide poll of 1,020 adults was taken June 21-23. It has an error margin of plus or minus three percentage points, according to The Associated Press.
The public also is losing confidence in big business and health care organizations, according to the poll. A fifth of those surveyed said they had a lot of confidence in big business, down from 28 percent last year. Thirteen percent said they had confidence in HMOs.
The survey also reported:
- Four of five had a lot of confidence in the military, up from two-thirds last year.
- Three in five had a lot of confidence in the police.
- Three in five had a lot of confidence in the presidency, up from 50 percent a year ago.
The survey didn't indicate what influenced Americans' opinions.
