NEPA News: "Church shopping" became popular during the 1960s and has grown more so over the last decade, said the Rev. Calvin Kurtz, executive director of the Reading Berks Conference of Churches in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Some seek a new church after changing residences, while others simply decide they want a church or religion that makes them feel more at home, he said.
The phenomenon has prompted many churches to update services and expand programs to attract new members and keep current congregants from leaving, he said.
Local church officials say many of the growing churches have these traits in common:
- Frequently change services to keep them fresh.
- Strong and varied programs for children and youth.
- Use tools such as videos and modern music to keep parishioners engaged.
- Relaxed dress codes.
- A welcoming attitude to all, including those of different cultural backgrounds and those who have been divorced.
- Focus on outreach.
