Foster's Daily Democrat: Firefighters are saying members of the Church of the Redeemer in Rochester, N.H., are "extremely lucky" their place of worship is still intact after a leaking stove filled the church with explosive gas.
Those entering the church Monday morning, Nov. 8, including about six area residents beginning their first day of a Graduate Record Examination study course, quickly evacuated the Wakefield Street building after becoming dizzy from a "rotten egg" odor.
Officials said the leak slowly filled the unoccupied church sometime between end of Sunday services and the staff's arrival Monday morning.
Any spark or open flame could have explosively ignited the pocketed gas, and would likely have caused severe damage to the church and injury to anyone inside, according to Deputy Chief Fran Zombeck.
