Catholic News Service: The Vatican has initiated new research on the Inquisition through an inventory of archival material, according to CNS. Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the project will attempt to catalog documents held in church, state and private archives, as well as Italian and foreign libraries.

The findings could change popular historical beliefs about the Inquisition in much the same way that a 1998 study revealed that torture and death for heretics, witches and others accused of crimes against the faith, were not as frequent as was long believed.
