Herald News: In an effort to thwart the influence of Halloween, considered by many churches to be a pagan holiday, some congregations will host alternative events called Hell Houses, which are designed to scare the hell out of you, literally.
Started in 1995 by Pastor Keenan Roberts of Destiny Church, an Assemblies of God congregation in Northglen, Colo., Hell Houses consist of a series of scenes or a play designed to provoke dialogue and action regarding eternal salvation and damnation. They are noted by religious and secular organizations alike for their graphic and homophobic nature.
It may be more difficult this year than in the past to find one. Fewer churches around the country are hosting them.
