ST. LOUIS -- President George W. Bush will address the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) live via satellite its opening day, June 11, according to the Baptist Press.
The president is scheduled to address the 10,000 conference attendees between 9:45 and 10 a.m. Central time, SBC President James Merritt said. The SBC conference runs June 11-12 in St. Louis.
Merritt, pastor of First Baptist Church, Snellville, near Atlanta, said the SBC is probably among Bush's strongest prayer partners.
"I have every faith that both President Bush and the messengers will be mutually encouraged by his addressing our convention," Merritt said. No details were given as to what Bush would speak about.
Bush's father, President George Herbert Walker Bush, addressed the SBC during his presidency in 1991.
The SBC annual meeting will be carried live over the Internet at www.sbcannualmeeting.net.
