COLUMBIA, Md. ââ¬â Pastor Luther W. Starnes figured if you can't beat Americans' proclivity toward prime-time television, join them. Starnes' new book, "A Christian's TV Guide," available through AuthorHouse, a print-on-demand publisher, is a compilation of his sermons using popular TV shows to teach spiritual lessons.
According to a news release, Starnes' sermons reference TV programs such as "Law and Order," "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and "The Price is Right." In "The Price is Right," for example, he writes that the price of salvation is the best possible price: free.
He uses "Law and Order" to contrast the civil justice system with God's laws and explains that "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" can fuel the desire to possess more material goods and shift attention away from life's greatest joys. Like the members of his congregation, readers are reminded of Starnes' positive message every time they wake up to "The Today Show" or test their knowledge during "Jeopardy."
Pastor of Gary Memorial United Methodist Church in Ellicott City, Md., for 17 years, Starnes' writes of "the assurance that a God of love is never failing in his willingness and power to meet us where we are." For Starnes, that includes entertainment. "A Christian's TV Guide" is his first book.
