WASHINGTON, D.C.ââ¬âMore than 92,000 people endorsed a mid-June apology ad sponsored by FaithfulAmerica.org, a project of the National Council of Churches, with support from the grassroots group, TrueMajority, and activists group, ResPublica.
The group is calling the campaign to put an ad on Arab TV expressing sorrow over torture in Iraq "tremendously successful."
The group organized the ad campaign primarily via e-mail and received $150,000 in contributions from people who endorsed the ad.
The ad ran on Arabic-language television networks several times beginning June 15, and was subsequently featured on MSNBC, CNN, and in most major newspapers.
The ad had a different impact in the Arab world than public apologies from the U.S. government following the discovery of Iraqi prisoner abuse.
"People have heard apologies coming from American officials, but measures that have been taken haven't convinced them that the apologies are sincere. But hearing apologies from religious Americans struck a chord here," Egyptian Gamal Abdul Gawad told NBC News.
FaithfulAmerica.org plans to run the ad again. They are hoping to increase the number of endorsements to 100,000. The group is calling itself a "new, progressive, faith movement." Included are people of Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim faiths.
The National Council of Churches calls the organization "one of the most successful such Web launches in history."
The group has been billed as a "new voice that rejects both the dogmatism of the right and the secularism of the left," according to the NCC.
FaithfulAmerica.org is not aligned with any political party, but does offer members opportunities for political involvement. Their Web site features an easy way to send messages to their elected officials, communicate with each other, sign petitions, and access inspiring sermons and commentaries from religious leaders about moral and spiritual challenges facing society.
