EXETER, N.H.ââ¬âThe Exeter United Methodist Church released a flock of 22 pink plastic flamingos for a fund-raising tour May 7, according to Seacoastonline.com.
The birds are still out landing on lawns to earn money for the Vacation Bible School program at the church. In fact, they have become so popular there is a waiting list.
Already the birds have earned more than $700 for the church program by asking homeowners to donate to get rid of the birds on their lawns. Church members could also purchase flamingo insurance for $10 to ensure their lawns would remain flamingo-free.
Only a couple Exeter UMC families have been flamingoed. But the birds have made 29 other visits. They landed at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church and stayed through Saturday Mass. A local realty firm tossed the flock beside their building. But most who have seen the birds have had a sense of humor about the fund-raiser. Donations average $25 or more, according to organizer Darlene Etter. The largest donation came from an insurance company who gave $250.
Etter said she expected the flock fund-raiser would not have taken so long, but she is still $1,300 short of her goal.
