APLINGTON, Iowaââ¬âThe Bethel Reformed Church will rebuild a mile from where their historic church building burned March 15. According to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, insurance will likely cover the majority of new construction costs.
The rural congregation will use the insurance settlement and raise an additional $250,000 to construct and furnish a new, 10,000-square-foot building.
Plans are still in the works, but the congregation already voted to move the building off a gravel road and onto a county road.
After the building burned the Aplington community came to the church's aid. Other churches offered their facilities for worship. KidQuest, a local business in Aplington, donates its space for Bethel's Sunday school. In addition, community members who are not church members have expressed interest in helping the congregation pay to rebuild.
Bethel's minister, the Rev. Scott Summers, said the unity among believers and within the small community has come out of the destruction of the church building.
"There are positive things that can come out of it, and I think we are trying to make them happen," Summers said.
