NEW YORK -- St. Paul's Chapel, which has served as a relief center following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, closed to the public May 29. The church will undergo its first cleaning since the attacks and should reopen in late summer, according to the Associated Press.

The Episcopal Church - which once stood in the World Trade Center's shadow - provided more than 500,000 meals and a place to rest for recovery workers.

The church filled nearly 14,000 shifts with 5,000 volunteers during the last nine months, the AP reported. A Eucharistic was offered each day at noon.

The $1 million relief effort was financed by donations, according to the AP.
