DURHAM, N.C.--A church in Durham held its first hip-hop "Remix" service Sunday night. According to NBC17 television in Raleigh, Compassion Ministries is hoping to answer the city's growing crime problem through the new ministry.
"In Durham we have an incredibly high crime rate that is attached to a young crowd," the Rev. Carl Kenney said. "We felt the best way to reach out to the population is to meet them where they are, and where they come from is hip-hop."
Chris Martin, known as Play from the 1980s group Kid and Play, attended the new service.
Thomas Porter, 11, said he thinks the idea is great and it's more interesting than traditional church services.
"The preacher talks for a long time. It's boring and sometimes you don't know what he's talking about," Porter said.
Kenney plans to hold the Remix service every fourth Sunday of each month. He also plans to bring in other well-known artists to perform. This fall, Salt from the group Salt n' Pepa will perform.
