PATASKALA, Ohio--For 50 years Phil Duncan has shared the gospel with anyone who would listen. According to Baptist Press the associate pastor of evangelism and discipleship at Jersey Baptist Church in Pataskala, Ohio, near Columbus, has a spiritual gift for telling others about Christ's love. Duncan said he isn't the only one who can witness.
He sharpens his evangelism skills with practice, but Duncan said prayer and time in the Word as essential. One morning prayer he often prays is: "God, here is my day. When do I jump up and go?"
Duncan said by staying close to God any Christian can better sense God's leading and timing for the work of salvation.
"I know that it's God's desire to draw everybody to Him," Duncan said. "But I also know the path to destruction is broad and many will find it, while the path to salvation is narrow and few will find it. But I don't know which ones are which." So he shares the gospel with everyone who wants to hear. Duncan estimates he has been to more than 10,000 homes to share the Gospel and has been privileged to lead hundreds and hundreds of people to Christ.
He uses one particular question to help determine a person's spiritual condition.
"You have to pause when you ask this question, but if you say it right, it works well," he told Baptist Press. The question is: "Have you ever personally given your life to Christ, or would you say you are in the process?"
In Duncan's experience, many answer, "I'm in the process," which Duncan said opens the door to ask permission to share how they can have peace with God.
Duncan said his gift of evangelism began at the age of 13, after he witnessed his older brother get hit by a car and later die. After that he sought eternal life and was filled with a desire to share salvation with everyone.
"When God saves us, he gifts us," said Duncan. He encourages other Christians to develop their spiritual gifts as they are part of God's plan. Jersey Baptist offers a course called Serving with Joy, for those seeking to understand their spiritual gifts.
"Christianity," he said, "is a 24/7 lifestyle, not a job."
About evangelism, Duncan said, "It's a daily walk, and I'm still learning. You've got to believe that God is going to do it. If you think it's you, then don't do it. Wait on the Lord until you know He's in control. He is supposed to BE your life. Wherever you are -- at work, at the store -- it doesn't really matter. The point of it all is: How can God love people through my life today?"
