NASHVILLE--More churches have joined the push to educate Americans to vote this November. According to Baptist Press, the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission has launched an initiative to register voters.
The Baptist organization joins others such as the National Council of Churches and the evangelical men's ministry, Promise Keepers, in efforts to energize Christians to vote.
Richard Land, president of the ERLC, said voting is incumbent upon Christians, like all Americans.
"To be uninformed or to not be involved in the process is to be irresponsible and to become part of the problem rather than part of the solution," Land said.
Land hosts Salem Communication's nationally syndicated radio program, "Richard Land Live!"
"Voters need to look for candidates who endorse their values and their convictions," Land said.
The goal of the ERLC's voter registration and education effort is to register 2 million new Americans for the 2004 election.
The initiative's Internet site is central to the effort: iVoteValues.com.
The bottom line, Land said, is that voters vote their values, "not their pocketbook or their party."
The iVoteValues.com site and the voting effort emphasize biblical values and encourage Christians to vote for candidates whose beliefs align with the Bible.
The Web site provides multiple resources for voters to educate themselves about the process and the politics involved in the upcoming election. The site also informs church leaders about legal political activities for a church including a call on churches to mark Sunday, July 4, and Sunday, Sept. 26, as "National Voter Registration Days."
