DENVER--Churches are neither satisfying nor spiritually challenging most Christian men, according to the latest Barna Research Group poll commissioned by Promise Keepers, an evangelical Christian men's ministry.

According to the Denver Post the survey questioned men who identified themselves as "born-again Christians" or "active church attenders." Some 415 men in Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, Baltimore and Atlanta were chosen randomly to answer the survey and 200 more men who have attended Promise Keepers rallies were also questioned.

More than 85 percent said they are not "spiritually challenged," and nearly six in 10 said they were only "marginally satisfied" with their church experience.

Family and children topped the list of men's priorities, followed by their career and money and then health concerns. Spirituality was further down the list.

The poll also showed that while most men knew of Promise Keepers, those who attended the events went with friends and not out of a spiritual longing.

"It's certainly clear to us that we have a great mission field in front of us in reaching the men of America," Tom Fortson, Promise Keepers' president and chief executive, said in a statement. "We've only scratched the surface."

Fortson took over for former president Bill McCartney, who resigned last year to care for his ailing wife. The former University of Colorado football coach founded Promise Keepers 14 years ago, saw it surge in popularity and then fall on hard times, including mass layoffs.

A new 18-city Promise Keepers tour begins in June.

Steve Chavis, a Promise Keepers spokesman, said the ministry commissioned the survey as "sort of a reality check." He said the poll clarified mission issues for the organization.

"It's certainly clear to us that we have a great mission field in front of us in reaching the men of America," Fortson said.

According to the Rocky Mountain News, Fortson called for Christian men to become politically active.

"It's time to get out of the arena and into the marketplace - our stand is not political, it's moral," Fortson said during a press conference.

"We are calling Christian men to change society by living under biblical authority and teaching others to do the same," he added.

Among the issues supported by Promise Keepers are marriage as a union solely between a man and a woman and an end to abortion, according to the News.
