ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.--Golfer Davis Love III turned a match soured by a heckler into a sweet offering to the St. Simons Presbyterian Church.
The Associated Press reports Davis donated his $700,000 he won in the Match Play Championship to the Georgian congregation.
A confrontation Love had with one person in the audience overshadowed his second-place finish.
Reportedly the fan kept saying "No Love" as the golfer prepared to play. Love finally confronted the man on the fifth tee and refused to continue until the heckler was removed.
"It was a good week, and that took all the fun out of it," Love said. "I went to David Duval's wedding, and the pastor said some things that made me think. Then our pastor said some things Sunday ... and it just seemed like the right thing to do."
The money will go toward the St. Simons's $5 million, five-year building project.
"We'd already made our pledge, but we wanted to do something more to make us feel better about the whole thing," said Love.
"That was a great week of golf for me, but no one was talking about it that way. It's a week I'll always remember, and we just wanted to make sure something good came out of it."
Love was second behind Tiger Woods at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. Feb. 29.
"It hits you that there are more important things than gold," Love said.
