DETROIT -- An Episcopal Church fund that helps poor families and small businesses in the Detroit area is branching out to include the interfaith community, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The $3.2 million McGehee Economic Justice Fund, named after former bishop H. Coleman McGehee, Jr., is being renamed the Michigan McGehee Interfaith Loan Fund.
The fund's new board includes Baptists, a Methodist, a Presbyterian and a Jewish representative, according to the newspaper.
"Now we expect the fund will grow even larger, and we can do more to help people," said John Hooper, the fund's executive director.
The fund offers loans at low interest rates to groups that build affordable housing, start small businesses and launch programs that help the poor, Hooper said. The fund is supported by individuals and religious groups who have invested at least $500.
