FISHERS, Ind.--Wesleyan Church leaders and staff moved into a new 70,000-square-foot building in the booming town of Fishers, Ind. According to The Indianapolis Star, the three-story building on the 4-acre site will be home to the world headquarters of the church.
The Wesleyan Church has 400,000 constituents in about 5,000 churches in the United States and serves nearly 80 nations with missions. Former church headquarters were in Castleton, Ind.
"We were looking to expand," said Earle Wilson, a church official.
That expansion came when the church found the acreage in development in the 700-acre Saxony residential, commercial and office project. The development provides easy access to the Interstate highway, and the planned village setting helped make the location ideal, according to Wilson.
David Holdren, chairman of the church's Board of General Superintendents, said the new headquarters is more visitor-friendly.
There is plenty of space for training programs and conventions. The building has a 400-seat auditorium.
An estimated 1,900 homes, town homes, condominiums and apartments are planned for the development. In addition, a medical office building is planned for an adjacent lot.
"Hamilton County is the fastest growing county in the Midwest," church superintendents said in a prepared statement.
"We are proud to be a part of that growth. The Wesleyan Church is one of the fastest growing denominations in the world," the statement continued. "We are proud of that as well."
The Wesleyan Church began in 1843. Some growth in the church has come through mergers with other denominations.
