PHOENIX--Food for the Hungry reports it has arranged emergency relief to families in Haiti.
The country has been rocked by violence in an uprising that led to the ouster of President Jean Bertrand Aristide.
Food for the Hungry sent in help just as about 100 U.S. Marines arrived to secure the airport in the capital.
Flaming barricades and blocked roads had become the norm as up to half of the country was assailed by rebels, depleting much of the food supply.
"We've been keeping a close eye on the Haitian situation, particularly since we have sponsored children, missionaries and additional staff working with families just across the border in the Dominican Republican," said Food for the Hungry President Ben Homan. "None of our staff is in danger and we are taking appropriate action in maintaining their safety."
Food for the Hungry helps the world's most disadvantaged people in 37 countries through child development programs, agriculture and clean-water projects, health and nutrition programs, education and micro-enterprise loans. Their focus is on physical and spiritual needs worldwide.
