KNOXVILLE, Tenn.ââ¬âTypically Christians clash over Bible interpretation, dogma or denominations. This time they're debating nomenclature.
According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, when Memphis pastor David Grayson started a new church called Church of God in Christ (New Day), the old Church of God in Christ (Pentecostal) objected. They lawyered up, went to court and won their case.
"This case is not about preventing Mr. Grayson from preaching the Gospel or forming his own church," COGIC (Pentecostal) attorney Allen Wade told reporters, "but this presents unfair competition under Tennessee law."
Grayson, who is a former bishop in the older denomination, said he would continue to fight for the right to incorporate under whatever name he pleases. COGIC (Pentecostal) leaders said that fight would indeed continue if Grayson is still pleased to use their name.
