ASHEBORO, N.C. ââ¬â To make room for expansion, leaders at Bailey's Grove Baptist Church are considering an option that has some people feeling a little uneasy.
The News-Record reported that church officials may move 62 graves to a new lot about 50 yards behind their building. The church outlined that option and others at a Jan. 5 public hearing attended by approximately 140 people .
Family members of some of the deceased in the cemetery were upset at the prospect of having the remains moved.
"I don't want you going into the cemetery," said Kenneth Allred Pool of Asheboro, whose grandparents, Christopher and Pearl Allred, are buried at Bailey's Grove. "I don't think it's right for moral reasons."
Others said they weren't opposed.
"If it's done in an appropriate manner, then it's all right with me," said Charles Allred. His father, James Samuel Allred, and other relatives are buried at the church.
Since 1995, the congregation has grown from 41 to 447 members and is projected to grow to 750 by 2010. To accommodate that growth, the church plans to build a new auditorium and education building within the next few years.
