NEWPORT, Vt. ââ¬â Unexpected opposition from neighbors and parishioners is causing church leaders to rethink plans to install cellular telephone antennas in three bell towers.
According to USA Today, the church council has recommended St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church reconsider the project.
Parish Council Chairman Michael Marcotte said the church's lawyer has been asked to investigate whether the church could back out of its contract with Verizon Wireless, if it came to that.
"There is talk of it, but nothing is firm yet," said Marcotte. "Verizon has not had a chance to come up and speak with the parishioners. They want to bring up their experts and sit down with the parish people."
Verizon would pay the church $1,500 a month under the contract. The final decision could come up as a vote among the entire parish, Marcotte said.
