SAN ANTONIO ââ¬â While burglars may have stolen their music, people in the community are helping members of St. Paul United Methodist Church regain their joy during the holiday season.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, burglars made off with almost $10,000 worth of music equipment after a church play Nov. 21. Since the church's plight became public, however, donations from all over the city have been pouring in.
"We are a small church in the hood," the Rev. Terrence Hayes said, smiling. "So the compassion from everyone has been uplifting. The community really has taken this burglary personal."
Johnny Cardona, a 67-year-old welder, offered to reinforce church doors and locks.
"If I was in the music business, then I'd donate instruments," said Cardona. "But I'm a welder, so I'll help with what I can."
The church received about $2,500 in cash donations, Hayes said, and others are talking about donating equipment. One woman drove from Cuero, about two hours away, to drop off a $100 check. Offers from people to lend CD players continue to roll in, the newspaper reported.
"Just when you feel like you are on a ship that is about to sink, people throw you life rafts from all directions," Hayes said.
During a prayer service this week, church members prayed for the burglars.
"They must have been a very desperate situation," Hayes said.
