SMITHFIELD, R.I. ââ¬â A burgeoning church is set to present its case for a zoning variance that would allow it to build a 2,200-seat sanctuary in a fast-growing commercial area.
According to The Providence Journal, First Church of God plans to pave a 935-space parking lot, and at least one councilman is concerned because it would take up much of the 40 acres the building project would consume.
If the plan is approved, the church would be the third large religious structure along a 1-mile stretch of secondary state highway. The land is zoned for 2-acre houses, but churches are permitted by a special-use permit.
The Rev. Reinaldo Guerra told board members in August that his congregation has outgrown its present 600-seat facility. The church conducts services twice on Saturdays and Sundays to handle the overload.
Guerra said worshippers from Providence, Cumberland, Johnston, Central Falls, Lincoln and Pawtucket attend services. He predicted his congregation will double in the next few years.
Guerra said the proposed church would have 15 to 18 classrooms to provide daycare and Bible classes for children while adults attend services.
The zoning board will hear discussion on the plan Nov. 19.
