BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The United Methodist Church bishops have chosen Sharon A. Brown Christopher to lead their 150-member council. It's the first time a female has served as president, according to a United Methodist News Service release.

Christopher, 57, took office in early May and will oversee council meetings for one year. She was ordained in 1972, serving the Illinois Area. She said her selection "is an expression of the heart of the United Methodist Church, a church of open hearts, open minds and open doors."

The bishops represent the more than 8.4 million United Methodist Church members in establishing policies and procedures for the denomination.
