LOUISVILLE, Ky. ââ¬â In light of a $26 million settlement to alleged sexual-abuse victims, Catholic archdiocese leaders have decided to try a new approach to fund-raising, The Associated Press reported.
Archbishop Thomas Kelly and other church leaders said they understand some people are angry about the church's handling of the crisis. In response, they are allowing parishioners to choose specific charities for their contributions to this year's Catholic Services Appeal.
Kelly said he is not asking Catholics to replace the settlement money, but he hopes they will look past the handling of the crisis and see fund-raising benefits many church charities and missions.
The archdiocese has set a $3 million goal for this year's appeal.
